Magnolia kobus | Kobus Magnolia

The Magnolia Kobus is a beautiful and very hardy medium sized tree, native to Japan and introduced to UK in 1865. One of the first to flower, the Magnolia kobus gives a spectacular display of large, 10cm across, white saucer-shaped flowers on bare stems in March and April. However, it can take 12-15 years before these flowers start to blossom. The flowers are followed by large 15cm long, mid green, oval-shaped leaves and and pink fruits with scarlet seeds that appear in late summer. This tree will thrive in most well-drained soil including chalk, in full sun or partial shade. Although it will withstand serve winters, it is best to plant the tree in a sheltered position away from exposure to cold winds. The Magnolia kobus has a pyramidal form when young but matures into a more rounded shape, sometimes reaching 8m wide. A stunning tree that will fit into most landscape schemes.

Magnolias are believed to be the earliest known flowering plants, with their fossils dating back over 100 million years. Magnolia trees even existed before bees! Instead of nectar, the flowers produce large quantities of pollen that the beetles use for food.
