Pterocarya fraxinifolia | Caucasian Wingnut or Walnut Tree
The Pterocarya fraxinifolia is a member of the walnut family, native to the Caucasian region, introduced into the UK in the 1780's. In late spring, small green flowers hang from the tree forming pendulous strings that can reach 50cm in length. The flowers develop into small, green, winged nutlets in late summer, and often remain on the tree during winter. Another characteristic is the large, green, hanging pinnate leaves that can be up to 60cm long with 15 to 20 pointed leaflets that turn bright-yellow in autumn. The Pterocarya fraxinifolia is a fast-growing, medium-sized tree that can spread wide with a heavy crown, so needs plenty of space to grow. Suitable for planting near lakes and rivers, this tree will thrive in moist, loamy and clay soil and tolerates both wet and dry conditions. It prefers full sun and plenty of light, and will not grow well in shade or tolerate salty, sea wind. The Pterocarya fraxinifoliais a beautiful and versatile specimen tree with large, compound leaves and winged nuts that make it a unique and interesting addition to any landscape.
