Fagus sylvatica ‘Riversii’ | Rivers Purple Beech
Fagus sylvatica 'Riversii' is a cultivar of the common beech, Fagus sylvatica. With the darkest foliage of all Beech, this is thought to be the best purple tree for colour. The ovate leaves are larger than the species and emerge red in spring turning a deep black-purple in summer, then bronze-red and gold in autumn. This is a slow-growing tree with a broad, spreading crown. The Fagus sylvatica 'Riversii' grows well in most well-drained soil, but won't be happy in wet ground, although it will tolerate some exposure. This is an amazing feature tree that looks its best when planted in full sun with lots of space to shine.
