Acer rubrum | Red Maple

Native to eastern and central, North America the Acer rubrum is a large, deciduous tree with a rounded habit. This is one of the best trees for a variety of red foliage all year round. Before the large three or five-lobed dark green leaves with serrated edges emerge in spring, it produces clusters of vivid red flowers. The Acer rubrum foliage begins to transform to autumn colour as early as August. At the height of autumn it produces a spectacular blaze of red, crimson and orange foliage. This is a lovely tree that gives best autumn colour when planted in moist, lightly acidic soil, and it will tolerate water-logging for short periods. The leaves are toxic to horses and therefore the Acer rubrum should not be planted near horse paddocks and equestrian centers.
