Arbutus unedo | Strawberry Tree

Arbutus unedo is a small, evergreen tree or shrub native to the Mediterranean and western Europe. It is an attractive tree with many interesting features. The main focal point is the arbutus berry that looks rather like the strawberry, hence the common name the 'Strawberry tree'. The fruit is loved by birds but, although edible is not pleasant to human taste. The leaves are dark green and glossy with serrated edges. The bark is a lovely red-brown colour and very tactile; it peels in long thin strips as the tree ages giving it a ragged appearance. The Arbutus unedo 'Strawberry tree' is late to flower with small, white, bell-like clusters in autumn alongside the fruit that matures into the size of a cherry with a rough surface. The fruit takes twelve months to ripen to deep red, and that provides a striking contrast to the white bell-like flowers. It will grow on most well-drained soil and is tolerant of pollution and coastal areas, although it does need protection from cold harsh winds. This tree will thrive best in a sheltered position with full sun. The Arbutus unedo is a superb specimen tree ideal for many different locations giving all year round interest and screening.
