Cercidiphyllum japonicum | Katsura Tree

The Cercidiphyllum japonicum is a popular ornamental tree native to Japan and China. This tree gives interest all year round with seasonal changes in leaf colour. Heart-shaped leaves emerge in spring with a pink-bronze flush before turning green in summer then shades of orange, yellow, purple and red through autumn. At the end of the season, falling leaves create a distinctive burnt sugar aroma, hence this tree's nickname; the 'Candy-floss Tree'. The flowers are inconspicuous among opening leaves in early spring. The fruit is a cluster of two to four follicles, each follicle containing several winged seeds. The Cercidiphyllum japonicum will grown on any moist well-drained soil, but acidic soil will produce the best autumn colour display. This tree prefers sun or light shade in a slightly sheltered position to protect it from strong winds and intense sun. A beautiful tree for gardens and parklands.
