Ligustrum ovalifolium | Privet
Ligustrum ovalifolium is native to Japan and Korea and was introduced to the UK in 1900's. This is commonly known as the 'privet', and used as an informal or formal evergreen hedge. This hedge is fast-growing with small, glossy, green oval-shaped leaves that form a very dense hedge. This plant is extremely tough and tolerant of trimming and pruning many times a year if you want to create a hedge at any height. Although it also works well, as an informal hedge. Ligustrum ovalifolium will produce clusters of small, white flowers in June to July, and small black berries, attractive to bees and birds, in autumn. However, regularly trimmed plants do not produce flowers or fruit. Strictly speaking the Ligustrum ovalifolium is 'semi-evergreen' and can drop its leaves if winter is very severe. But that rarely happens, making this a good screening hedge that is attractive and easy to look after. Ligustrum ovalifolium is the most common hedging plant species in cultivation in the UK.
