Morus nigra I Black Mulberry

The Morus nigra is native to South Western Asia and was introduced to the UK as far back as the Roman times. It is a small attractive tree with bright green, serrated edged, heart-shaped leaves; although the same tree can also have wavy deeply lobed leaves adding to the unique character of this tree. It has a spreading, rounded shape which as the tree matures becomes domed and can have a spread almost as wide as it is high. One of the most interesting aspects of the Morus nigra are the large fruits which appear in summer, they are edible and deep red, purple and black in colour. This delightful tree with it's architectural domed crown will add character and interest to any garden and is tolerant of most conditions although prefers a light well drained soil in a sunny, sheltered location.
