Photinia x fraseri ‘Red Robin’ | Christmas Berry
The Photinia x fraseri 'Red Robin' is a very popular, dense evergreen shrub with an upright habit that matures to make perfect hedging at 4-5m high. This plant can also be grown as a tree with a clear stem, 1/2 standard and in pleached form, making it very versatile and ideal for screening. Renowned for its colourful foliage the new growth, which appears in April, is bright red turning dark, glossy green as the plant matures. The Photinia x fraseri 'Red Robin' is relatively fast-growing but does need to be pruned regularly to keep its density and encourage new red leaves. If left unpruned, clusters of tiny, delicate white flowers will appear in spring, followed by red berries that ripen and turn black later in the season. These berries are a favourite of birds and wildlife. The Photinia x fraseri 'Red Robin' is a hardy plant that will do well in most soil but thrives in fertile well-drained soil, in a sunny position.

Photinia x fraseri, from which Red Robin was chosen for its bright red growth, was created at the Fraser Nursery, Alabama, in the 1950s by crossing Photinia glabra and P. serrulata. The Photinia x fraseri 'Red Robin' has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society prestigious Award of Garden Merit (1993).
