Pinus nigra | Black Pine | Austrian Pine

Native to Austria and the Balkans, the Pinus nigra was introduced to the UK in the 1830's. The Pinus nigra is a fast-growing, hardy, evergreen tree, perfect for screening and windbreaks. Pyramidal when young, it broadens as it matures into a large, impressive tree with a dense crown and irregular form. If planted in full sun and free-draining soil, even chalk, this tree will do well, but avoid locations that may leave it water-logged. The Pinus nigra is tolerant of heat, drought, salt, sea-winds and air pollution, so is suited to both coastal and urban locations. It can be pruned and shaped to fit into a smaller environment as necessary. This is a very versatile tree often seen at roadsides, roundabouts, even in churchyards.

Traditionally Pine trees were thought to ward of bad spirits and protect buildings and cattle from misfortune, disease and lightening. Barns and stables were swept with pine-twig brushes, and sprigs were hung above doorways. This tree is a favourite to bonsai.
