Populus nigra ‘Italica’ I Lombardy Poplar

This large impressive tree was introduced to the UK from Northern Italy in the 1750's. It is a fast growing tree and recognised for it's erect, columnar habit which stands out in any landscape and is often used as a windbreak and seen planted along roads, canals and farmers fields. It has a single straight trunk with upward facing branches. The leaves are smooth, hairless and diamond to broadly triangular shaped; these start brownish-green in spring turning to green in summer then yellowish-green in autumn. It's ability to grow well in any environment and soil type, even waterlogged and coast areas; makes the Populus nigra 'Italica' an extremely popular and useful tree provided you have the space to allow it to reach it's full potential.
