Prunus subhirtella ‘Autumnalis’ | Winter Flowering Cherry
Native to Japan, the Prunus subhirtella 'Autumnalis' first brought a bit of colour to our dull winter gardens in 1894. Unique among flowering cherries this tree produces white, semi-double flowers from November to March. After flowering comes the bonus of a small fruit popular with many British garden birds. By spring long, oval and sharply toothed dark green leaves offer shade throughout the summer turning shades of yellow and orange through autumn before dropping in winter. Like most Prunus this tree will grow in well-drained soil and tolerate urban pollution. The Prunus subhirtella 'Autumnalis' is a small tree with a pretty, round head suited to most gardens, parks and urban streets.
