Prunus yedoensis I Yoshino Cherry
The Yoshino Cherry was cultivated for centuries in Yoshino, Japan, before being introduced to Europe and America in 1902 and is one of the most popular flowering Cherry trees in the world. It is renowned for it's single blush white flowers which appear before the foliage in March/April, they hang in clusters of 5 or 6 and have a slight almond scent. When the leaves emerge they are a coppery bronze with serrated edges and turn deep green in the summer followed by a lovely display of red/orange in the autumn. The Prunus yedoensis is a small to medium sized tree with upright arching branches giving an almost weeping effect as it spreads out with maturity. It will thrive in most well drained soils, although not wet or chalky soils and prefers a sunny location. This beautiful ornamental Cherry tree is loved by all wildlife and is a welcome sight to any garden and parkland setting.
