Tilia europaea ‘Pallida’ | Common Lime | Kaiser Linden

Tilia europaea 'Pallida' is a variety of the Common Lime. This is a fast-growing, deciduous tree with a uniform pyramidal habit. The leaves emerge earlier than the species and are slightly heart-shaped, lush mid-green with a yellow-green underside. Early autumn, the leaves turn a rich yellow and orange. Clusters of sweetly scented yellow-white flowers appear in summer. The bark is thin and grey, and develops grooves as the tree matures. Twigs start a yellow-brown then turn reddish; this is a key feature to identify the tree. Very tolerant, the Tilia europaea 'Pallida' grows in most soil including clay. However, as with all Tilia x europaea, this specimen is prone to aphid infestation causing aphid drip which can be messy, so care needs to be taken with tree positioning. Tilia europaea 'Pallida', with its impressive uniform canopy, is a great tree for avenue planting, it responds well to pruning and is suited to pollarding and training into pleached and box-head specimens. Tilia europaea is a hybrid between Tilia cordata and Tilia platyphyllos.
